Dialing in the future for endpoint security management

Endpoints can be PCs, laptops, smart phones, tablets and specialized equipment that are connected to a corporate network. All of these devices can create security havoc for IT organizations as they try to thwart viruses, malware and other threats to their corporate data. Endpoint security management addresses these security issues with a policy-based approach to network security that requires endpoint devices to comply with specific criteria before they are granted access to network resources. Endpoint security solutions provide malware protection, web security, email security, firewall functionality and other critical security functions across all enterprise endpoints.

According to research firm MarketsandMarkets, the endpoint security market is estimated to grow from $11.62 billion in 2015 to $17.38 billion by 2020 ‒ an estimated 8.4% CAGR. This growth market, says analyst firm ESG, includes two types of endpoint security solutions, each with different objectives.

  1. Advanced prevention provides better endpoint security than typical anti-virus solutions. The objective is to prevent a higher percentage of attacks and addresses daily system re-imaging.
  2. Advanced detection and response actively seeks threats with forensic capture capabilities. The objective is to proactively hunt down threats and respond and remediate attacks very quickly.

ESG reports from a recent study that 75-80 percent of enterprises were purchasing new tools for advanced threat prevention, while the remaining 20-25 percent market opted for advanced endpoint detection and response tools. ESG also makes the following endpoint security predictions that will happen over the next few years:

  • All-in-one suites that include both prevention, detection and response will appeal to midmarket and small enterprises. Since advanced detection and response requires a high skill level, many organizations will outsource to service providers. 
  • Large enterprises will continue their security with a best-of-breed approach. Organizations will move toward next-generation endpoint security projects with specific requirements and objectives.
  • Antivirus products will try to catch up to the advanced providers. Traditional antivirus providers are stepping up their game, adding innovative software capabilities.
